Physical and Chemical Properties

Boiling point 83°C (ignition); density 1.23 g/ml at 25°C (ignition); flash point 53 °F; storage conditions 0-6°C; solubility Esters, ketones, ether-alcohol mixtures (collodion) and glycol ethers are soluble.Nitrocellulose is relatively stable, safe and easy to transport. It is white or slightly yellow cotton wool, flammable and explosive, with poor chemical stability. It can slowly decompose and release heat at normal temperature, and will accelerate decomposition when it exceeds 40°C. If the released heat cannot be lost in time, it will cause the temperature rise of nitrocellulose to intensify, and spontaneous combustion will occur when it reaches 180°C. Nitrocellulose is usually added with ethanol or water as a wetting agent, respectively, called nitrocellulose wine cotton or nitrocellulose water cotton. Once the wetting agent is lost, it is easy to cause a fire.

Application

a.High nitrogen content commonly known as fire cotton, used to make smokeless gunpowder.

b.Low nitrogen content commonly known as rubber cotton, used to make paint, artificial leather, film, plastic and so on.

Storage

Wet with more than 25% water, ethanol or plasticizer (more than 18%). Stored in iron drums. Handle and unload with light weight to prevent the container from damaging the liquid from volatilizing. Do not heat or heat the friction iron, and keep the articles permanently moist. Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse dedicated to explosives. The warehouse temperature should not exceed 30 ℃. It is necessary to prevent heat and sun, avoid contact with electric lights, steam pipes or other heat sources, prohibit all kinds of open flames, keep away from places prone to fire sources, and store and transport them in isolation from organic amines, acids, alkalis, reducing agents and other resistant articles.
