Chemical Properties
Peroxodisulfate contains peroxy groups and is a strong oxidant that can oxidize Mn2 + to MnO4-. Ammonium peroxodisulfate can be prepared by electrolysis of an aqueous solution of ammonium bisulfate.
Ammonium persulfate soluble in water.

Application

  1. As a source of radicals, APS is mainly used as a radical initiatorin the polymerization of certain alkenes. Commercially important polymers prepared using persulfates include styrene-butadiene rubber and polytetrafluoroethylene.
  2. Illustrative of its powerful oxidizing properties, ammonium persulfate is used to etch copperon printed circuit boards as an alternative to ferric chlorideThis property was discovered many years ago.
