Ethylene glycol,abbreviated as EG. The chemical formula is (CH2OH) 2, which is the simplest binary alcohol. Ethylene glycol is a colorless, odorless, and sweet liquid.Miscible with water, lower aliphatic alcohols, glycerol, acetic acid, acetone, and similar ketones, aldehydes, pyridines, and similar coal tar bases, slightly soluble in ether, almost insoluble in benzene and its homologues, chlorinated hydrocarbons, petroleum ethers, and oils.

Application

  1. The major use of ethylene glycol is as an antifreeze agent in the coolant.
  2. Ethylene glycol is used as a de-icingfluid for windshields and aircraft, as an antifreeze in automobile engines, and as a component of vitrification (anticrystallization) mixtures for low-temperature preservation of biological tissues and organs.
  3. Ethylene glycol is a useful desiccant.
  4. Minor uses of ethylene glycol include the manufacture of capacitors, as a chemical intermediate in the manufacture of 1,4-dioxane.
  5. Ethylene glycol may also be one of the minor ingredients in screen cleaning solutions.
