Physical and Chemical Properties:
This colourless liquid is the simplest organic nitrile.It is produced mainly as a byproduct of acrylonitrile manufacture.It is used as a polar aprotic solvent in organic synthesis and in the purification of butadiene. Acetonitrile is a common two-carbon building block in organic synthesis of many useful chemicals.Acetonitrile has a free electron pair at the nitrogen atom, which can form many transition metal nitrile complexes.
Application:
- Acetonitrile is used mainly as a solvent in the purification of butadienein refineries.
- In the laboratory, Acetonitrileis used as a medium-polarity solvent that is miscible with water and a range of organic solvents, but not saturated hydrocarbons. It has a convenient liquid range and a high dielectric constant of 38.8.
- Acetonitrileis widely used in batteryapplications and it is a popular solvent in cyclic voltammetry.
- Acetonitrile plays a significant role as the dominant solvent used in oligonucleotide synthesisfrom nucleoside phosphoramidites.
- Industrially, it is used as a solvent for the manufacture of pharmaceuticalsand photographic film.
Storage:
Acetonitrile should be stored in a cool and ventilated place.Acetonitrile should be kept away from sparks and heat sources, and the storage temperature should not exceed 30 ℃. Acetonitrile needs to be sealed and stored in corresponding containers, and the containers should be kept sealed during storage.Acetonitrile should be stored separately from oxidants, reducing agents, acids, alkalis, combustibles, and edible chemicals, and should not be mixed for storage.Prohibit the use of mechanical equipment and tools that are prone to sparks.
